Blue Tansy essential oil (Tanacetum annuum) is also known as Moroccan Chamomile. As its alternative name suggests, it originates from Morocco. It’s extracted from the plant flowers via steam distillation. Blue Tansy has a lot of useful properties making it a great essential oil for a lot of situations. Uses of Blue Tansy essential oil
Blue Tansy is often used to treat damaged or irritated skin, including:
- Blisters
- Bruises
- Burns
- Inflammation
- Itching
- Rashes
- Skin irritation
- Sunburn
- Wounds
This is because the chemical chamazulene that gives Blue Tansy its distinctive and vivid blue color has both anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It’s typically used in blends and applied topically for skin treatment. As with any essential oil, it’s important to patch test before applying Blue Tansy to the skin. This is especially true if you’ve got sensitive skin.
Blue Tansy is also used for anxiety and stress relief. It’s known for invoking a feeling of well-being and self-control. And it’s also great at helping with focus and restoring balance.
In addition, it’s used for the treatment of asthma and other respiratory problems. It’s also effective at treating allergies due to its anti-allergenic and anti-histamine properties. It works very well for this purpose when inhaled (e.g. with a salt pipe) or diffused using a diffuser.
Other uses for Blue Tansy include treating arthritis, inflamed joints and muscles. And it’s also often used to treat fungal infections such as athlete’s foot.

Blue Tansy has a beautiful and distinctive sweet, fruity and herbaceous aroma. It blends well with the following essential oils among others:

Note that it’s important not to confuse Blue Tansy essential oil with Tansy essential oil. In contrast to Blue Tansy, Tansy oil is toxic and you shouldn’t use it for aromatherapy purposes. Common Tansy oil (Tanacetum vulgare) is light yellow in color, and contains no chamazulene.
You should avoid using Blue Tansy essential oil on children, the elderly, pregnant and nursing women and those who suffer from epilepsy.
