I’ve written about a variety of uses for essential oils<\/a> in the past and one area that’s particularly important to me, because my sister suffers from the condition, is the use of essential oils for psoriasis treatment.<\/p>\n

So in this article I’m going to cover some of the\u00a0oils that work best for treating and relieving the symptoms of this horrible and irritating condition..<\/p>\n

First though, let’s take a quick look at what exactly psoriasis is…<\/p>\n

What is psoriasis?<\/h2>\n

Psoriasis<\/a> is a skin condition that causes pain and itchiness.<\/p>\n

While there are several types, the most common type is called plaque psoriasis.<\/p>\n

It’s most commonly characterized by reddened skin with thick, white scales.<\/p>\n

You’ll usually see it occurring on the elbows, knees, and on the scalp and it can be caused or worsened by a number of different factors including stress, emotional upset, certain medications, and infection. It also has genetic links, so it tends to run in families, often skipping every other generation.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, psoriasis starts with the immune system. Skin cells reproduce too quickly and build up into plaques before old layers can be shed. While some suffers may go into remission<\/a>, when suffering an outbreak it can be a distressing disease that leads to low self esteem and depression.<\/p>\n

Psoriasis can be treated in a number of ways including topical treatments, UV light, and systemic treatments. More recently, many people have begun to turn to essential oils<\/a> for psoriasis treatment with impressive results.<\/p>\n

The best essential oils for psoriasis<\/h2>\n

Essential oils are natural oils that are typically obtained by distillation of their source. Sources are often plant based.<\/p>\n

Many essential oils are used as treatments for different types of ailments or diseases, including allergies<\/a>, hemorrhoids<\/a> and even erectile dysfunction<\/a>. The oils are usually not prescribed by doctors, but they often work better and more naturally than any medications.<\/p>\n

Skin disorders, especially psoriasis and eczema<\/a>, may be treated and soothed by a variety of different oils.<\/p>\n

Here are some of the best essential oils for psoriasis:<\/p>\n

Coconut oil<\/h3>\n

While coconut oil<\/a> is not actually considered an essential oil, it does have anti-inflammatory properties, and it can sooth the pain and discomfort of psoriasis. It’s generally safe and has no side effects.<\/p>\n

Coconut oil can be used directly on the affected areas of the skin or scalp. But, since it is actually a food item, it can also be ingested.<\/p>\n

Taking up to two tablespoons of coconut oil daily may help stop many viruses and bacteria from getting into the body. The coconut oil can be used in many different recipes.<\/p>\n

Tea tree oil<\/h3>\n

Tea tree oil is an essential oil for psoriasis that comes from the leaves of the mellaluca plant that grows in Australia. It’s said to have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties.<\/p>\n

Most people can use tea tree oil\u00a0with no problems, but you should always test a small area<\/a> before applying to larger areas in case you are overly sensitive.\u00a0In addition, take care not to use too much because it can dry out the skin and cause other problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tea tree oil can be applied directly to the skin. It may help to apply it to a patch of psoriasis where the skin has been scratched and broken open.\u00a0It should be mixed in equal proportions with a carrier oil such as coconut oil or olive oil.<\/p>\n

A mixture of five drops of tea tree oil and a half of a cup of olive oil is a great preparation when using\u00a0essential oils for scalp psoriasis.<\/p>\n

Lavender oil<\/h3>\n

One of the most studied essential oils, lavender oil has shown definite antibacterial properties when traditional medicines have failed.<\/p>\n

It’s been shown to be successful in treating wounds, such as those caused by scratching psoriasis, as well as muscle pain.<\/p>\n

And it’s a great essential oil for psoriasis treatment and can be used in many ways…<\/p>\n
