Acne isn’t a painful or life threatening condition. But it can still cause real distress for those worried about getting acne or having to deal with its signs. This makes acne treatment and prevention very important.
And when it comes to treating it, it’s important to know that acne isn’t a single skin disorder but a group of them.
For girls and women, the types of acne most likely to be of concern are:
Some types of acne
- Acne vulgaris, which is most common in young people around the time of puberty. It’s most often seen on the face and chest. It goes without saying that it’s the facial signs that cause the most self consciousness in girls.
- Acne cosmetica, which is a form of acne caused by the use of cosmetics. This makes it of special concern for girls and women.
- Acne rosacea, which is a red rash that appears most often on the face.
- Acne conglobata (Hidradenitis suppurativa). This form of acne shows in abscesses or boils of sweat glands and hair follicles. It also appears in women’s underarms, groin and buttocks, and under the breasts.
The effects of acne can not only mean damage to the skin. It can also bring psychological problems and loss of self confidence and self esteem. A bad case of acne can mean the sufferer reluctant to go out in public. It’s clearly a skin problem that the sufferer wants to go away as soon as possible.
Basic tips for acne treatment and prevention
For most people, acne treatment and prevention is possible. Here are just a few basic tips:
- Remember that natural body chemistry changes during the teens can cause acne. The same is true of the menopause and menstrual cycles. So don’t think the condition is here to stay the first time you see it on your face. Keep calm and confident and resolve to beat it.
- Bacteria clogging the skin’s pores can also cause acne. So a priority is skin cleanliness and keeping the pores clear and open. That will benefit your overall health too. The skin plays an important role in your immune system, allowing your body to sweat out toxins.
- Use an exfoliating cleanser and anti-acne soap and wash your face with them every day. You can get the best results by washing when you get up in the morning, and last thing at night before you go to bed.
- Do not squeeze pimples. This can prolong the life of a pimple and even cause scarring.
- Buy an anti-acne facial mask and use it two times a week. These masks have disinfectant and healing properties that help with your acne.
- Drink lots of water. Your body needs water to repair and maintain every part of it, including your skin.
- Keep your hair away from your face, particularly your forehead.
- Make sure you eat a good healthy vitamin rich diet. Vitamins and minerals are key to your skin health long term. You can also consider taking a multivitamin and chromium supplement.
- Do not use makeup, paints, and so on, unless they are water soluble, or marked as noncomedogenic. Even then, only use sparingly. You can enhance your beauty without going overboard with cosmetics.
- If you must go out in the sun, apply a minimal sunscreen, with SPF 15. Choose one that’s a noncomedogenic or nonacnegenic sunscreen. Then it won’t clog your skin pores.
There are also many natural remedies you can use, for example I’ve previously written about using epsom salt for acne treatment.
