It’s not just the elderly or the sick that can suffer from dark circles under the eyes. People of all ages are affected by this condition, and your overall health may in many cases have nothing to do with it.
As such, even if you get your regular eight hours of quality sleep every night, live a healthy lifestyle with plenty of exercise and follow a good diet, you could still find yourself with the need to get rid of under-eye circles.
So let’s take a closer look at some of the causes of these dark circles and how we can get rid of them …
What causes dark circles?
Dark circles under the eyes can be a hereditary condition. So if other members of your family have problems with them, that could be the cause.
Other causes can include:
- Your capillaries leaking blood.
- Dehydration (do you perhaps live on soft drinks and coffee and forget to drink enough water?)
- Sleep deprivation.
- Your skin tone (lighter skin may accentuate any circles under the eyes).
- Allergies and frequent rubbing of the eyes.
- Stress.
- A protracted illness.
- Staring at a computer or mobile screen for long periods (a very modern cause!)
There are quite a few other causes too, but these are the most common ones so now let’s consider some ways that we can get rid of them …
How to get rid of dark circles under the eyes
There are various ways to get rid of dark circles under the eyes, from home treatments to cosmetics to surgery. Here’s a few examples …
Home remedies for dark circles
We all have cucumbers and tea bags in our homes (well most of us, anyway), and these two items are two of the most popular home remedies for dark circles under the eyes.
For example, you can try putting thin slices of cucumber over your eyes, and leaving them there for about ten minutes.
As for tea bags, take a used herbal teabag (make sure it’s cooled off, of course!), squeeze it dry and put it on your eyes, also for about ten minutes.
You must take care you don’t get the fluids from either the cucumber or the tea bag in your eyes as this could obviously cause discomfort.
The results from using these home remedies can vary. Some people get great results while others unfortunately have results that are barely noticeable. Indeed, for some people these methods don’t work at all.
Specialist eye creams for dark circles
Specialist eye creams are one of the most effective treatment options for dark circles under eyes.
By choosing the correct eye cream, you can achieve excellent results. And if you shop smartly, you don’t need to pay a fortune either.
A word of caution though. When buying eye creams you should pay attention to the ingredients because the skin under your eyes is thin and sensitive and can react badly to harsh creams. For example, retinol creams are often recommended, but these can cause nasty irritation on the skin around the eyes.
Using gentle and natural products is a better course of action.
One great ingredient that has proven itself very effective at treating dark circles under the eyes is called Haloxyl. It was formulated specifically for this problem and produced impressive results in clinical trials.
The additional advantage of using an eye cream or gel for this purpose is that it’s a long term solution.
Advanced treatments or surgery
Laser treatment, chemical peels, filler injections and eyelid surgery have all been used for treating dark circles under the eyes too.
However, treatments such as these should be your last resort as they can be expensive and will not necessarily provide long term relief.
